Get Connected Toormina
About Us
Background
Get Connected Toormina was developed in response to an identified community safety need and in conjunction with the initial resurfacing of the Toormina Skate Park by Coffs Harbour City Council in November 2017. The Get Connected project has a range of strategies to improve community safety and engagement outcomes in Toormina.
Coffs Harbour City Council and Blue Sky Community Services (formerly Mid Coast Communities) worked together during the first stage of this project, with the support of many stakeholders and partner organisations. Initial efforts included the identification and consultation of community stakeholders, and holding a community event in 2017 and subsequently supporting partner organisations voiced their commitment to developing a broader project in 2018, providing in-kind support and outreach to youth and community members where capacity allows.
Implementation Group
A Get Connected Project Implementation Group was formed to help drive the project. Members include representatives from the two lead organisations, Coffs Harbour City Council and Blue Sky Community Services, as well as representatives from the supporting partner organisations, and stakeholders, including: NSW Department of Communities and Justice, NSW Police Local Area Command, Toormina High School, North Coast TAFE, Coffs Learning Centre, employment agencies, youth and mental health services, community members, women’s domestic and family violence specialist services and drug and alcohol services.
Needs and aspirations identified
The needs and aspirations identified by the Toormina community through community consultation have driven, and continue to drive, the direction of the project, identified infrastructure upgrades have been delivered from the grant budget and completed by CHCC, to support the delivery of social crime prevention programs and reduce anti-social behaviour.
The project implementation group have acted, and will continue to act, as a project steering committee, overseeing the direction and implementation of the project.
